NoustaView is a free, browser-based DICOM viewer. There's no install, no account, and — this part matters more than it might sound — no server. A study you open stays in this browser tab and nowhere else.

Why it exists

Most existing DICOM viewers fall into two camps: not affordable, or clearly not designed with students in mind. Meanwhile, a lot of the actual need is small and occasional — a teacher running one exam, a student reviewing one case, a colleague without PACS access who just needs to look at a study once. None of that should require an install or a hospital IT ticket. It should just open.

Exam Mode exists for that specific case — it strips identifying information and adds deliberately fail-safe navigation between cases, built for the actual mechanics of running an assessment, not added as an afterthought to a general-purpose viewer.

The name

NoustaView comes from nousta — Finnish for "to rise" or "to ascend." The idea it's named for is a small one: a good view of something shouldn't depend on where you happen to be. The same study should be just as reachable — anytime, anywhere, with nothing more than a browser — and accurate enough to actually rely on for a class, a case discussion, or a review.

What it's for, and what it isn't

This is a review and teaching tool. It is not a certified medical device and is not intended for primary diagnostic use. It does not replace a calibrated diagnostic workstation. GPU rendering requests a higher-precision path where the browser supports it, falling back to 8-bit otherwise — nothing about that affects the accuracy of what's displayed, only how it's computed.
